Tips on how to stay positive in difficult times:

There are many times in life, school, work, etc. where people find they cannot keep themselves motivated, and it can have a huge impact on their general mood. We tie our emotions to our work and often when things do not go the way we want them, we will remember those occurrences more than the positive ones. Therefore, it is important for people to take time to praise the work that they do and look at their failures as something they can learn from. One thing that most people tend to forget when they fail or when everything seems to go wrong, is that in those times there is always room for growth.

We as humans are resilient and have the ability to analyze what went wrong, so in turn, we can learn from those problems and create solutions to avoid the same issues in the future. It is because of this reason that we should be embracing our lows as much as our highs because without the opportunity to grow, we could not learn to be better for ourselves and others. It is also dire that people designate time to themselves outside of work and school in order to center themselves. When you really spend the time taking care of your mental stability, it allows for a recharge so that we can go forward in a more positive and happy light. This is one of the many elements to analyze and implement to staying positive during difficult times.

Life is hard. Being positive when life is throwing everything it can at you makes it even more difficult. However, that does not mean there is not a way to help overcome these obstacles that life puts in our path. For instance, work may be having you pick up slack from your other coworkers who are being lazy or not doing their part. This situation in it of itself is a whole mess and may cause you to feel stressed out or even run down. Nonetheless, do not let that discourage you from completing your work and pushing through. A good way to think about a situation like that is knowing that even if you are having to do more work, you will have accomplished more that day than any of your other coworkers that you had to pick up slack for. That makes you not only a team player but most importantly, you take that home as a victory knowing that you did everything that needed to get done with little to no help. You are the man! Now you go home and sit down on the couch looking back at your accomplishment. Creating and implementing this mindset is a method to staying positive during difficult times.

Another example could be you are in school and there are a ton of assignments you need to complete; you have 3 essays and 2 tests to complete within the next few days. You are feeling overwhelmed and bogged down. Even with all that, do not let it keep you down. Instead take some time to just relax. Even if for just 10 minutes, just sit down and do something that makes you happy, whether it is watching some TV, working out or even just taking a quick nap. Taking that time to let yourself let go of that stress and the weight on your shoulders for just a short period of time gives you a chance to reset. In this time, it lets you re-energize and feel motivation again to be able to complete those assignments, the 3 essays and 2 tests, without feeling like the world will come crashing down. With, if you have that feeling of being overwhelmed, come back and just repeat that process of taking some time for yourself. Now after completing all that work you had on your plate, take the time to look back at all that you did. This helps you to not only process all that work you did but also appreciate how much you were able to accomplish. Always take to the time to appreciate the victories because they will all stack up and make you feel happier and prouder of all the work you have accomplished. These are some of the methods on how to stay positive in difficult times.

For me, I would say it comes down to one thing and that thing is attitude. You see, I tend to be an optimistic person. I have always been known to be calm and relaxed in whatever situation I am in. One’s attitude can affect your work and the other people around you. When things go wrong or if plans change, I am not one to resist change. This may sound corny at first, but I like to make my attitude be like water. This idea of being like water comes from one of Bruce Lee’s sayings. I came across this probably around the time when I was in middle school, but the follow is what Bruce Lee said in an interview one time:

You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.

When I first read this way back when, I felt that his was talking about attitude. One’s attitude can become one’s reality. If you feel like you are going to have a bad day, then the chances are high due to the attitude that you have going into the day. That is why it is best have a positive mindset daily that way the priorities one has stay positive and makes it easier to change the bad back into the good. Implementing this mindset will provide support in staying positive during difficult times. Overall, perspective is based on one’s attitude, so I highly recommend trying your best to be optimistic or at least understand your own perspective. In short, have your attitude be like water!

Closing Recap:

Again, this past year has been very challenging to get past which made it, for many, hard to stay positive during difficult times. Focusing on the bad should not always be the focus. Rather staying positive during difficult times as there was good out there too. It is just easier to notice when things go bad compared to when things go good/well. Even so, we hoped that the following above helps others find their way to getting back into the positive. Let us know your tips to stay happy during troubling times. Thanks for reading and have a great, positive rest of the week!
