Now more than ever, people are suffering mentally; whether it is due to the pandemic, home life, work-life, etc., you name it, and it is an additional stressor for almost everyone. Because of this, we have devised 5 great tips to utilize now, and in the future, to help reduce your mental strain, and increase your overall mental health.
This post is all about the best tips to be mentally healthy.
Tips to be Mentally Healthy:
1. Get Plenty of Sleep
As we all know, sleep plays a large factor in one's health, both mentally and physically, yet it often gets put on the back burner. Poor or a lack of, sleep have been linked to difficulties with memory recall, weakened immune systems, and mental health issues. Your sleep plays a huge role in how you function in everyday life and while it may seem impossible to make minor changes such as adjusting the light, noise, or temperature of the room, it can make all the difference in the world.
2. Get Plenty of Sunlight
It is well known that sunlight is a wonderful source of vitamin D, which is beneficial for both our bodies and our brains. This is beneficial due to the fact that we all have chemicals in our brains, such as endorphins and serotonin, which work to improve our mood, and the sunlight works to release these chemicals. Whenever possible, it is recommended to take at least 30 minutes, but no more than two hours of sunlight a day.
3. Manage Stress
Many times, we find we are overloading ourselves and are becoming stressed out. While most stress is unavoidable, there are ways to adjust and cope with it. For starters, it is crucial to understand what your triggers for stress are. Once you have a better understanding, it is important to manage your responsibilities by organizing them into a list or schedule. I find when I make a list and emphasize the items that are the top priority or my highest stressors, I complete the first and will be less stressed for the rest, as a result. Additionally, it is important, if you begin stressing out about all the work you must accomplish, you write every single item down. Doing so will take the major stress of remembering the tasks off your shoulders.
4. Do Something You Enjoy
The interests you have are distinctly personal and the hobbies you choose to take part in, whether it be solo or as a group, can provide many benefits when it comes to your mental health. Research has shown those with hobbies are less likely to struggle with mood swings, stress, and depressive moods. Finding activities that allow you to feel relaxed and a sense of comfort do not always have to be solo activities. Group activities have shown to improve your communication and relational skills.
5. Do Things for Others
Struggles with mental health can be a result of a variety of things like negative thinking, feelings of isolation, and lack of passion. We are not implying going out and volunteering in your community will solve all your problems, but we are saying volunteering does help give people a sense of purpose. Working hand in hand with others who have a strong connection to a cause will also increase the passion you have for your community. Often the smallest things can make the largest impact, so getting out in the community and surrounding yourself with others, can help reduce any feelings of isolation and can negate many intrusive thoughts.
All in all, using these five tips, among other “mental exercises,” will help to encourage a healthy mental state. We wish you the best in these hard times, and know we believe in you, just keep pushing every day!
