When humans procrastinate it means to put off doing something out of casual carelessness or common laziness. You will find yourself postponing that paper or project that is due, or you might have that “do it later” mentality. Whether we admit it or not, once you start procrastinating, you begin to build a dependency on the act until it becomes a habit.
Now, procrastination is not all negative. Some people really do work better “under pressure” or procrastinating can help alleviate stress or the pressure that is on you to complete the task. But for me, procrastination has always had a negative impact on me. When procrastinating, I would not be productive or bettering myself; it would usually consist of sitting on my phone or watching the television.
If you are like me, and you being to find yourself procrastinating, read these tips that have helped me combat my procrastination. These ideas are something I began to utilize and can say with confidence that I have used to overcoming procrastination.

How to Stop Procrastination:
1. Organize
You need to know what needs to be completed before you complete it. Purchasing any sort of planner or calendar will help you keep track of all the tasks you need to complete. Personally, I use an agenda and a whiteboard. My whiteboard stays in my room while I bring the agenda with me for class. I like the whiteboard because it is satisfying to erase a task rather than crossing it out.
2. Prepare
I suggest planning at least a week out. I personally will take Sunday to lay out my week and write down all tasks that are needed to be done and by what time (due dates). I also color code based on activities. For example, blue will be school-related, red is work, green is clubs, and black would be other activities. You do not have to do that, but it is easier on the eyes.
3. Eliminate ALL Distractions
This is one of the most difficult things to do. The world is so connected, and we have all the information right in the palm of our hands. It is important to rid yourself of all potential disruptions before you begin working so you don’t get sidetracked halfway through your task. Turn off your television, your phone (yes, all the way off), and separate yourself from external distractions. It varies for each individual, but I am most productive in a silent room. Whatever you are intrigued with on your phone will more than likely be there when you are done with your tasks.
4. Use Incentives
Procrastination can occur because people love that feeling of instant gratification. Finish an assignment days before it is due may not seem rewarding because you do not get that grade you worked for immediately after. Everyone loves being rewarded and it is important to give yourself incentives, no matter how small. It could be something as simple as giving yourself an hour at night to watch your favorite show. I also like to write down my weekend plans so once I finish my week on Friday, it is a reminder that I completed everything I needed to and now I get to have a weekend full of joy and relaxation.
In my experience, using these four tips is extremely effective and efficient when trying to overcome procrastination. If you choose to implement these tips into your daily/weekly lives, you will see a large increase in your productivity!
